It has been named one of the highest callings in the world. Nothing truly prepares you for motherhood. All of the books and advice do not always speak to your unique situation. As a mom, you are on duty 24/7, with no time off and no sick days.
While you love your family, sometimes you just need a break. Being a mother is only part of who you are. You need time to nurture yourself and renew your mind and spirit.
Every once in a while, try doing something nice for yourself. You don’t have to wait for your birthday or Mother’s Day. Even if it is just taking a short drive to enjoy the peace and quiet, do it. You will be surprised how revived you feel when you give yourself some quality time. Here are some other helpful hints for busy moms:
Do Not Do It Alone
When you try to be Supermom, you set yourself up for exhaustion and failure. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Figure out ways that you and your partner can split the responsibilities of keeping the house and children. If you are a single mom, maybe you can enlist the help of family and trustworthy friends. Try swapping babysitting and errand running with some close friends. This plan gives everyone involved a much-needed break.
Take Care Of You
You cannot take care of anyone right until you take care of yourself. Fatigue is often caused by poor eating habits and not getting enough sleep. Take a look at your family’s diet and see if there are some changes you can make. When you kick out the junky processed stuff and bring in more natural items, your whole family will benefit. Try to go to bed a little earlier so you can get the rest you need. If you get tired during the day, do not feel guilty for taking a little nap.
Take Time To Connect With Others
Even if you work outside of your home, you may not have time for a social life. Take at least one evening a week to reconnect with your partner. Get a babysitter for the kids and have an intimate date. Instead of telling your friends “no” all the time, try to have a girl’s night out once a month. When you socialize with others, it energizes your spirits. It also gives you a break from daily monotony.
Give Yourself A Treat
You work hard as a mother, and you deserve a special treat every now and again. Why not splurge on a day at your local spa? A time of meditation and deep massage would be great for you. Go to your favorite salon and get a relaxing manicure/pedicure. Not only will you feel better, but you will have the sexiest nails in the house!
No One Is Perfect
Remember those iconic television mothers who solved their families’ little problems in a half hour? Their hair and makeup were flawless, their homes were always clean, and they vacuumed in heels and a string of pearls. Sorry mothers–that was Hollywood make-believe. Real moms are not that perfect, and you should not even try.
Do the best that you can do and forget the rest. The important thing is that you are a loving mother who takes good care of her family. Remember to show yourself the same kindness that you do to others. You are worth it!
